2010 Society Picnic

As people milled around the J.B. Speed School of Engineering on Monday, September 20, the smell of Hot N' Ready pizzas lingered in the air. A racecar and off-road vehicle were parked casually near the sidewalk, as tables with posterboards started popping up. Confused students meandered about, trying to figure out how to acquire this "free pizza" with paper tickets?

This scene describes the 2010 Society Picnic, held from 11:00 am-1:00 pm last Monday. Thanks to all of the societies who participated, it was a great success! Students learned about Speed School societies and received free food, which was certainly a win-win.

2010 Society Cup

This year's Society Cup was held on Saturday, September 18th with four different teams competing. There were six different events in which societies competed to gain control of the Society Cup. Each competition awarded points, 4 for first place, 3 for second place, 2 for third place, and 1 for fourth place. All of the pictures from this year's event are available on Facebook and on Flickr.

The Societies
Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE)

Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE)

Speed School Student Council (SSSC)

Society of Women Engineers (SWE)

The Events
Kickball
The first event of the day was kickball. The teams competed in a bracket format playing 3 innings for each game and only two outs per inning.

The games and scores are as follows:
Game 1: SAE (13) vs. SWE (1)
Game 2: IEEE (4) vs. SSSC (3)
Loser Bracket: SSSC(5) vs. SWE (3)
Winner Bracket: SAE (4) vs. IEEE (1)

Tug of War
The tug of war event was also run in a tournament fashion. Not much to explain here, all you need to do is drag the other team's marker across the line.

The matchups were as follows:
Round 1: SAE (W) vs. IEEE
Round 2: SWE vs SSSC (W)
Loser Bracket: SWE vs IEEE (W)
Winner Bracket: SAE vs SSSC (W)

Balloon Toss
The balloon toss event required a pair from each team to toss a water balloon back and forth. After each successful toss back and forth, everyone took a step backwards. SSSC was the first team to be eliminated. After a few more rounds all three of the remaining teams were eliminated at the same distance. IEEE, SAE, and SWE all took another balloon and repeated the event. SWE was the next team to be eliminated followed by SAE. IEEE was the only team that remained, mostly, dry.

Three Legged Race
The three legged race was a relay race that required each pair from each team to run 40 yards. The race ended in a photo finish with IEEE lunging across the finish line to just barely beat out SSSC.

Shoe Race
The shoe race required four members from each team to put their shoes in a pile. The pile was then mixed up. Each member of the society was required to run to the pile of shoes that way 40 yards away and then put on their shoes before tagging the next member. The race was dominated with IEEE which finished almost 40 yards ahead of the next team.

Hot Dog Eating
The final contest was the hot dog eating contest. The rules required one member from each society to eat six hot dogs as fast as possible. Watch the video to see how each team did.

Congratulations To Our Summer Event Champions!

This summer, Speed School Student Council held two student competitions, the Summer Sports League and Speed School's Biggest Loser. SSSC would like to thank all of the students who participated and congratulate the following teams and individuals.

Congratulations to the "Punch Bros.," who won the highly competitive Volleyball league which had 17 teams compete.

Also, congratulations to "My Team" who won the Ultimate Frisbee league.

Speed School's Biggest Loser was especially competitive, as a cash prize was involved. First place went to Randy Cross, who lost 22.2 pounds, which was an 8.20% loss from his starting weight!
Cristina Heisler came in second place by losing 16.6 pounds, a 7.97% decrease. Third place went to Lauren Speaker who lost 7.8 pounds or 4.68% of her original weight. (She is sad to report, however, that after summer break and going on vacation, she has probably gained most of it back!)
Thanks to everyone who participated! If there is enough interest, we may host this event again in future semesters.
